Not because it is unpredictable, and not because it is manipulated. Because traders bring FX habits to an instrument with four times the range, and the position size they are used to becomes four times the risk they intended.
Every rule here follows from that one fact.
Rule 1 — Half your normal risk
If you risk 1% on FX, risk 0.5% on gold.
The reason is not that gold is more dangerous per unit of risk — a 1R loss is a 1R loss. It is that gold's wider stops and larger gaps mean your realised loss deviates from 1R more often. Slippage on a 40-point stop is larger in absolute terms, and a gap through it costs more.
Half risk absorbs that deviation without changing your worst-streak arithmetic.
Rule 2 — Size from ATR, never from habit
Before any gold trade, check ATR(14) on your trading timeframe.
ATR
Minimum sensible stop
3 points (15m, quiet)
4–5 points
8 points (15m, active)
10–12 points
30 points (4H)
35–40 points
A stop inside 1× ATR is inside noise. It will be hit by ordinary movement that has nothing to do with your idea being wrong.
Then size from that stop, using the formula from the risk lessons. The size is an output. Every time.
Rule 3 — Never carry gold through a tier-1 US release unsized for it
FOMC, CPI, NFP. Gold can move 40 points in ninety seconds with spreads five to eight times normal.
Your stop is a request. On a 15-point stop, a 25-point slip means you took 2.7× your intended risk on an event that was on the calendar weeks in advance.
Three acceptable choices: flat, halved, or full size *having explicitly sized for the slippage*. Arriving at 13:30 without having chosen is not one of them.
Rule 4 — One gold position
Gold is one instrument with one primary driver. Two gold positions is one trade at double size, and adding a second because "this setup is also good" is the size ratchet with a technical justification.
If you already hold gold and are long silver, short USDCHF and long AUDUSD — those are all substantially the same real-yield and dollar bet. Count gold in your currency exposure ledger as a dollar-negative position.
Rule 5 — Avoid the two dead zones
22:00–00:00 UTC (rollover). Spreads widen to several times normal. Price can spike on almost no volume, taking stops that no genuine transaction justified.
00:00–07:00 UTC (Asia), for entries. Widest spreads relative to the available range. And the Asian extremes are what London targets — entering inside that range means placing your stop precisely where the day's most predictable move is heading.
Rule 6 — Weekend gaps are a decision
Gold gaps at the Sunday open. A geopolitical event over the weekend can produce a gap far larger than any stop.
Holding gold over a weekend is a decision to accept an unbounded, unstoppable risk. It can be the right decision — but at reduced size, and never by default because you forgot to close.
Worked example
Two traders, $10,000, same gold setup: entry 3,404, stop 3,374 (30 points).
Trader A applies FX habits. They usually trade 0.10 lots on EURUSD, so they trade 0.10 lots on gold.
Risk: 30 points × $10 per point per lot × 0.10 = $300 = 3% of the account
They intended 1%. They took 3%, and nothing on the screen told them.
Eight of those in a normal streak: −22.4% drawdown, requiring 29% to recover.
Trader B calculates. 0.5% = $50 risk, 30-point stop:
Same analysis. Same entry. Same stop. Same eight losses. One trader is down 22% and reaching for size to recover; the other has barely noticed.
Then the second difference. Both hold through an unexpected CPI. Gold gaps 25 points through the stop.
Trader A: −$550 instead of −$300
Trader B: −$55 instead of −$30
The slippage was identical in points. The consequence differed by a factor of ten, decided before either trade was placed.
The six rules
Half your normal risk percentage.
Size from ATR — a stop inside 1× ATR is inside noise.
Flat, halved, or explicitly sized before tier-1 US releases.
One gold position, counted as dollar-negative exposure.
No entries during rollover or the Asian session.
Weekend holding is a decision, taken at reduced size.
What to take away
Gold removes traders through position sizing, not through unpredictability.
ATR decides the stop; the stop decides the size. Habits decide nothing.
Scheduled US events override every technical consideration on the chart.
Gold is a dollar-negative position in your exposure ledger.
Every rule here exists because gold's range is several times a major pair's — nothing more mysterious than that.
